If you’re in the market for a durable, stylish yet classic sports and diving watch, the Breitling Chrono Avenger is hard to beat in terms of raw power, functionality, precision and legibility. This is one rugged-looking, heavy-duty and extremely versatile watch that can take daily abuse no matter what the life throws at you. Weather you are active in sports, like to chill at the beach, or enjoy deep diving, this watch is your go-to tool. Breitling is a highly respected Swiss made brand with a history of superior quality marine and aviation tool watches and the Chrono Avenger is no exception.
Built on a military spec platform, designed for divers and navy seals, it’s as robust as it gets. Don’t get me wrong there are watches like the Rolex Submariner or a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms that were designed specifically for diving, however if you are looking for have a slight edge on chronograph functionality, performance, and price point I would most definitely go with Breitling.
The reason being is that it has all the characteristics and functions you would look for in sports diving watch and more. The solid titanium 44mm case, highly legible and perfectly proportioned dial with chronograph subdials, the titanium bracelet with a divers extension on the clasp, somehow it’s just all there.
Now, lets dive deep and analyze some features presented on the Chrono Avenger. The dial on the watch is very aesthetically balanced and incredibly easy to read. It features oversized white luminous hands, Arabic numerals and white markers over a stark black background as well as a date window at 3 o’clock position. The hands and markers both glow in the dark so it can easily be read late at night or during dives.
The dial is protected by a slightly curved, polarized with anti-reflective coating sapphire crystal that eliminates unnecessary reflections thus adding more contrasts and appeal to the dial. In terms of the timer functions, there is the large chronograph sweeping seconds center hand with a red tip, the minute counter sub dial at 12 o’clock, the 6 o’clock subdial that counts off hours and the second hand located at the 9 o’clock position. The chronograph timer is very practical tool to keep track of any activity such as swimming, jogging or CERTAINLY diving.
Case, Bezel & Crown
Structurally speaking, the Breitling Chrono Avenger is very sturdy; with its titanium case and bracelet it was designed to withstand intensive use while remaining comfortable on the wrist despite its 44mm case diameter. Titanium metal is a warm greyish color and is often used in aviation due to its lightweight and non-corrosive properties, making it ideal sports watch.
Another reasons why Chron Avenger is an excellent choice for a scuba diving is that its water resistant down to a depth of 1,000 feet (300 meters). Thanks to its oversized screw down crown and screw-down case back. The unidirectional rotating bezel is engraved with special markings, enabling the wearer to keep track of time while diving. The bezel is ratcheted, easy to turn, rotating counter clockwise with 120 clicks required for one full rotation.
The crown on the Chrono Avenger is quite large and easy to grip even with gloves on, thanks to the 3 rows of knurls on the side. Breitling has designed a screw down crown using 2 gaskets, which provide just enough resistance to safely maintain the watch’s water resistance. Breitling has embellished the tip of the crown with its signature “B” which of course adds elegance. The chrono pushers are well designed and to start and stop you need a little pressure. The crown and pushers are very well protected by the handsome design, both structurally and aesthetically.
Bracelet & Straps
Bracelets on Breitling watches are all a work of art and completely functional at the same time. The bracelet on the Chrono Avenger is made of solid titanium links or lugs, which are lightweight yet strong. The links on the bracelet curve slightly down to hug your wrist, adding to the comfort. The pro1 titanium bracelet comes with an extension that allows you to wear it over your diving suit, although you may prefer a rubber strap on for diving.
Movement & Accuracy
At the heart of Breitling Chrono Avenger lies one of the most trusted and tested Swiss made movements on the market today. The Chrono Avenger’s caliber B13 is based on the Valjoux ETA 7750. It is very simple in design, easily maintainable by most watchmakers and among the most widely used chronograph movements of today. All movements used by Breitling are sent for COSC certification where they undergo rigorous testing for reliability, shock resistance and timekeeping. Checking the watch on the telegrapher, it runs spot on! The standard COSC certification does allow the watch to run -4 to +6 seconds a day, depending on the air temperature, and the position the watch is in.
When the Breitling movement is fully wound the power reserve lasts 42 hours, which is the minimum standard. This is important to remember because if you only wear it during the week and not on the weekend, the movement will stop if not manually wound before the power reserve runs out. Since this watch would be appropriate for almost any occasion, just wear it on the weekend to solve the problem.
Overall Assessment
The Breitling Chrono Avenger is incredibly comfortable for everyday wear. Although it is bulky and fairly thick at 17.6mm, it only weighs 100 grams, including the titanium bracelet and less when worn with either the rubber or leather strap. The watch measures 44mm across if you don’t include the crown, so it is raised up a bit on the wrist, but still very comfortable.
The Chrono Avenger may be one of Breitling’s least expensive models in their chronographs line, but you would never know it because the overall look, quality and feel is simply superb and worth every penny. Where else could you get a beautiful top quality divers watch under $3000?
